What the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ means for PIA members

It’s been just over a month since President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law on July 4. For those in the insurance industry, this bill brought more than a few sparks to shake up the status quo. Some changes were positive, others were questionable, but there is enough room for PIA Northeast to get to work at crafting policies on the state level. This includes changes to the Qualified Business Income deduction, annual Administrative & Operating inflation adjustment for crop insurance agents and more.

New hurricane season report; Tropical Storm Erin forms

The Department of Atmospheric Science of Colorado State University has issued a new report for hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin. The report maintains its forecast for an above-normal 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, though it has a lower-than-normal confidence with this outlook. The report anticipates a slightly above average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States and in the Caribbean for the remainder of the season. Early this week, Tropical Storm Erin formed in the Atlantic basin and may develop into a major hurricane as it approaches the Caribbean and Bahamas. PIA’s Hurricane Info Central tool kit offers PIA Northeast members one spot for all their hurricane-related resource needs. PIA members also can contact the PIA Industry Resource Center at resourcecenter@pia.org or use the Ask PIA button on the PIA home page to ask a specific question. PIA Northeast members can also access Top 10 insurance tips for hurricane season in the PIA QuickSource library.

Heatwave grips parts of the Northeast

The five states in PIA Northeast’s footprint were impacted by multiple days of extreme heat, pushing feel-like temperatures into the high 90s. This string of hot weather started on Sunday and was projected to end Wednesday. The states of Connecticut and New York issued their respective warnings regarding the extreme heat, encouraging residents to take proper precautions to keep themselves safe. Extreme heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion and can exacerbate a multitude of preexisting conditions. PIANY victory: DFS adopts uniform hurricane definition

The New York State Department of Financial Services has finalized a regulation establishing a standardized definition of “hurricane” for homeowners insurance policies statewide. This action directly implements legislation championed by PIANY and signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul late last year. The newly adopted regulation creates consistent standards for how and when hurricane deductibles can be applied. It takes effect on Feb. 2, 2026.
