NFIP extends after the government shut down resolved

Last week, on Nov. 12, 2025, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund most of the federal government—including the National Flood Insurance Program—until Friday, Jan. 30, 2026. The extension, which is retroactive to Oct. 1, 2025, marks the NFIP’s 34th short-term extension since the last five-year reauthorization expired in 2017. NFIP’s Bulletin W-24020 provides information for insurance agents on what to do with claims received during the period the NFIP lapsed. Agents should refer to the bulletin for full reauthorization guidance. PIA has long advocated for a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP.
