Coastal storm hits the Northeast, bringing rain and floods

Over the weekend, the Northeast experienced a deadly coastal storm that brought flooding and damage to states in the PIA Northeast footprint—Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. The states of New Jersey and New York each declared a state of emergency due to the inclement weather. PIA’s Hurricane Info Central tool kit offers PIA Northeast members one spot for all their hurricane-related resource needs. PIA members also can contact the PIA Industry Resource Center at resourcecenter@pia.org or use the Ask PIA button on the PIA home page to ask a specific question. PIA Northeast members can also access Top 10 insurance tips for hurricane season in the PIA QuickSource library.

Consumer content: Halloween, crime and your insurance

Halloween is almost here, which means trick-or-treaters, fun costumes, lots of candy and, unfortunately, an uptick in vandalism and crime. There are many reasons why crime rises during the holiday, but the important thing is that you help keep your insureds’ property safe through the right insurance coverage. Remind them that when there’s a case of vandalism or theft, don’t panic: they should document everything, then contact their independent insurance agent.

AM Best: WC lines key driver of p/c insurance

A new report from AM Best has indicated that the U.S. workers’ compensation line of coverage remains a key driver of the profitability of the property/casualty insurance, though economic uncertainty could result in turbulence for insurers in the near future. The report, titled “Workers’ Compensation Continues With Strong Profits, Despite Pricing Cuts,” states that the line remained profitable in 2024 with a combined ratio of 88.8, the lowest among the major p/c lines of business, even as net premium written for the industry fell nearly 7% due to rate decreases and pricing cuts.

Conn.: Federal reimbursement announced for road and bridge repairs following Aug. 2024 floods

Gov. Ned Lamont and the members of Connecticut’s Congressional delegation announced that the Federal Highway Administration has approved $25 million in emergency relief funding to reimburse the Connecticut Department of Transportation for costs related to road and bridge repairs following the historic Aug. 18, 2024, rain and flooding event that impacted the western portion of the state. The funding announced comes in addition to $3 million in quick-release emergency relief funds FHWA approved last year—bringing the total federal emergency relief funds allocated to Connecticut for road and bridge repairs due to this storm to $28 million. The total cost of emergency road and bridge repairs resulting from this storm is estimated to be approximately $40 million.

N.J.: September ACORD forms update

In the latest ACORD forms update, New Jersey ACORD 62 NJ New Jersey Auto Supplement–Basic Policy Coverage Selection is revised effective Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025.

Watch out for drive-other-car exposure

Sometimes, personal auto policy endorsements can expand their protection when business exposures exist. The inverse also is true: business auto policy endorsements can be expanded to include protections for personal exposures. Drive-other-car exposures occur when people drive business autos for personal use. To learn more about this exposure, PIA Northeast members can read Is a drive-other-car exposure lurking in your files? in the PIA QuickSource library.
