New study: Long-term wildfire smoke exposure attributed to 24,100 deaths annually
A new paper from the journal Science Advances found that from 2006-20, long-term exposure to wildfire smoke particulates contributed to an average of 24,100 deaths a year in the contiguous United States. Fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke poses serious health risks by penetrating deep into lungs and entering the bloodstream. Short-term effects include coughing and irritated eyes, but in the long term it exacerbates health issues like respiratory illness, cardiovascular and neurological diseases and premature death. As wildfire season expands due to climate change, it’s important for independent insurance agents to have discussions with their clients to help them protect their property in the increasing event of a wildfire.
N.H.: Newly introduced bill could change state vehicle registration system
New Hampshire’s auto insurance system is different from most states, utilizing a “financial responsibility system” that typically applies only after an accident has occurred. However, a new bill (H.B.1558) was introduced this 2026 legislative session: if passed, it would require proof of insurance or adequate financial responsibility for vehicle registration. This bill could change the shape of the state’s auto insurance system for independent agents and consumers.
N.Y.: New NYCIRB collaboration with state schools
The New York State Workers’ Compensation Board entered a new collaboration with the State University of New York and City University of New York school systems to encourage injured New Yorkers to apply for the schools’ Reconnect programs. These programs offer free associate degrees to New Yorkers aged 25-55 who do not already have a college degree: the programs cover the cost of tuition, books and supplies. New York state-based independent insurance agents can inform their business clients that NYCIRB is now offering this program.
Compliance
N.Y.: Cyber security compliance certification deadline April 15
Those individuals who hold a New York state insurance license—covered entities—including nonresident licensees, have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to certify their compliance with the requirements of New York state’s cyber security regulation (23 NYCRR 500) for calendar-year 2025. This filing requirement is for all licensees not covered by another covered entity’s information system. This certification, which is required annually, must be filed via the New York State Department of Financial Services’ web portal. Interested in learning how to navigate 23 NYCRR 500? PIA Northeast has written a series of articles on the topic.
Advocacy
N.J.: Priority step-down legislation introduced in state Senate
The New Jersey state Senate President Nicholas P. Scutari, D-22, has introduced S-3187 for the 2026-2027 legislative session. This bill addresses one of PIANJ’s top legislative priorities—ending step-down clauses in personal auto policies in the state. The bill would prohibit a motor vehicle liability policy from restricting the amount that may be recovered under the policy based on who is driving or riding in the vehicle—meaning that means drivers would receive full coverage even if they aren’t the policyholder for a vehicle. The introduction of this legislation is a breakthrough and needs grassroots support to see its passage.
Technical
Craft a unique customer experience for the hard market
The current hard market has put many independent agents on the backfoot, with its increased premiums, reduced capacity and (understandably) frustrated clients. However, agents still can make substantial changes to their customer service experience, which can lead to growth amid adverse market conditions.
