ALBANY, N.Y.—The Professional Insurance Agents of New York State Inc., applaud Gov. Kathy Hochul for signing legislation to require insurance companies to make a good-faith attempt to verify a drivers’ driving history prior to binding a personal automobile insurance policy.
“The law, which was a top priority for PIANY during the 2023 legislative session, will ensure that consumers are presented with a full and accurate quote prior to being required to pay any insurance premium,” said PIA New York President Gary Slavin, CLTC, CIC. “We applaud Gov. Hochul, Sen. Neil Breslin, D-44, and Assemblyman David Weprin, D-24, for supporting this common-sense law to protect consumers from unexpected premium increases shortly after a policy is bound.”
The law (A.4688/S.5764B), which takes effect 180 days from today, does offer a few exceptions if an individual’s driver history is unavailable due to a service interruption or other event outside of an insurance company’s control.
PIANY members advocated for the insurance-buying public by participating in grassroots campaigns to advocate for the passage of this law during each stage of the legislative process.
