AM Best offers mixed picture of US auto insurance industry

AM Best issued new reports of the success and hurdles of the U.S. auto insurance industry. One report, titled “Stuck in Reverse: Commercial Auto Losses Keep Mounting,” found that the U.S. commercial auto insurance line continues to burden the overall property/casualty industry, accounting for more than $10 billion in net underwriting losses over the past two years. Meanwhile, a separate report titled “US Personal Auto Insurance Segment Sustains Underwriting Turnaround Into 2025,” found that U.S. personal auto saw the segment’s first-half 2025 direct loss ratio fall again from the same two previous six-month periods, indicating that the significant rebound experienced in 2024 may carry over through 2025.

For more information, PIA Northeast members can access Boost your agency’s defense with disclaimers in the PIA QuickSource library.

Government shutdown week two; NFIP still lapsed

Last week, the U.S. government entered a shutdown, meaning that certain services performed by the government have been paused until funding legislation is passed. Among the programs affected include the National Flood Insurance Program, a government program that provides flood insurance to help reduce the impact of flooding. PIA will be monitoring this issue closely: PIA has repeatedly called for a long-term extension of the NFIP, so it would not lapse in the case of a government shutdown.
